Red flour beetle ( Tribolium castaneum ) |
|
Adults are 4.0 to 5.0 mm long and their bodies are reddish brown.
They infest various kinds of dried foods, such as grains, milled cereal, spice, nuts, and dried fruits. Using their strong mandibles, they bore into the packages of food products.
Females lay 500 to 1,000 eggs during their lifetime.
They develop into adults in about two months and live for more than 200 days. |
|
Confused flour beetle ( Tribolium confusum ) |
|
Confused flour beetles closely resemble red flour beetles.
They have similar life cycles and feeding habits to red flour beetles.
Confused flour beetles can be differentiated from the red flour beetles by the shape of the antenna and the length between eyes.
Adult beetles have a tolerance to lower temperatures than red flour beetles. |
|
Lesser grain borer ( Rhyzopertha dominica ) |
|
Adults lesser grain borers are 2.0 to 3.0 mm long and their bodies are red-brown to black-brown. They infest various kinds of dried food, grains, milled cereal, spice, nuts, dried fruits, and dried meats/fish. Females lay 300 to 500 eggs in these foods. The larvae bite into grain kernels and pupate there. They develop into adults in about one month. |
|
Saw-toothed grain beetle ( Oryzaephilus surinamensis ) |
|
Adults are 2.5-3.5 mm long and their bodies are black-brown. They have flattened bodies and six saw-toothed projections on the each side of the thorax. They infest various kinds of dried food; grain, milled cereal, bread, pasta products, chocolate, candy and dried fruits. Adult female lays 100~300 eggs. They develop into adults about 40 days and live 6-10 months. |
|
|
Khapra beetle ( Trogoderma granarium ) |
|
Adult body size is 1.8 to 3.5mm and male is obviously smaller than female. Both male and female adults can not fly. The khapra beetle is multivoltine species, but diapause under low temperature or food shortage. The khapra beetle infests various kinds of dry foods: grains and beans, their processed foodstuffs, vagetable seeds, dry pet foods, crude rubber, leather groducts.
The khapra beetle is the only one species of stored-product insects, which was listed as the worst 100 exotic species by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources). |
|
|
Flat grain beetle ( Cryptolestes pusillus ) |
|
Adults are 1.5 to 2 mm long and reddish-brown. They have highly flattened parallel-sided bodies and long antennae.
The beetles are important pests of cereals, cereal products, oilseeds and dried procecced foods of vegetable origin. In tropical regions they infest nuts, cocoa, copra and cassava. They can feed on mold on grain germ, because they originally inhabited under the bark of tree and used it as food in the field.
Female adults lay 170- 200 eggs. This species develops from an egg to adult emergence in about 25 days and lives for about 150 days at 30℃.

|
|
Maize weevil ( Sitophilus zeamais ) |
|
Adult weevils are 2.5-4 mm long, brown to black. Their head has a characteristic snout. The weevil is a major pest of whole cereal grains, more commonly associated with rice, wheat, barley and corn.
Females lay up to 150 eggs over their lifespan. Eggs are laid singly into grains. A female chews a small hole, into which she lays an egg. The hole is then plugged with a waxy secretion. Larvae develop hidden within a cavity hollowed out within the grain.

What's "TORIOS®"? |
|
"TORIOS®" is a reusable and widely applicable pheromone device for monitoring of crawling stored-product insects.
"TORIOS®"is a available for the following crawling stored-product insects.
Pheromone lures are on sale.
Red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) *
Confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum)
Lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica)
Saw-toothed grain beetle (Oryzaephilus surinamensis) **
Khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium) ***
Flat grain beetle (Cryptolestes pusillus)
Maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais)
|
These lures contain aggregation pheromones and their mimics that attract adults male and female.
* The confused flour beetle's lure is used aggregation pheromone's mimic.
** The saw-toothed grain beetle's lure is used aggregation pheromone and food attractant.
*** The khapra beetle's lure is used sex pheromon that attracts adults male.
"TORIOS®" employs stickers instead of oil as the capturing tool, so handling is easy. Moreover, "TORIOS®" is made from degradable plastics in order to decrease environmental load. |
|
"TORIOS®" is used for early detection of the occurrence of target insects and determination of the sources of their occurrence.
Furthermore, TORIOS® provides the following function by counting the number in facilities.
・Survey on seasonal variation in occurrance
・Distribution
・Check in pest control, etc.
|
|
For safety |
The lure for seven target insects containes minute amount of synthetic aggregation and sex pheromone, aggregation pheromone mimic and food attractant.
The lure contains no harmful materials and insecticide and is thus designed human- and environment-friendly. |
How to use |
Place the device on the floor alomg the walls.
Recomendation : Interval 5 to 10 m apart
Replacement : one month after opening
Place the devices away from manufacturing lines so as to avoid attracting adults that could contaminate the products.
The devices should be placed at more than 10~20 m away from entrance to avoid attracting adults that are living out doors.
|
Shelf life and storage |
The shelf life is one year after the manufacturing date.
Use up the products within the expiration date.
Keep the products in the dark, cool and dry conditions.
